Quicksilver’s new dramatic venture tells the magical story in Shakespeare’s tongue and contemporary language, through the eyes of the three youngest characters, Mamillius, Perdita and Clown. A TALE FOR WINTER introduces the world of Shakespeare in an accessible way as it explores timeless characters and relevant issues for young people today.

A TALE FOR WINTER an adaptation by Nona Shepphard is for children 8+ and their families.

Primary Voices title
PRIMARY VOICES is a unique writing programme that aims to produce a piece of new writing which is alive to the contemporary world of 8-11 year olds in a completely new way. Developed with the artistic support of Soho Theatre and in association with Islington based theatre company Tiata Fahodzi, it will take place over three years and work with children aged 8–11 in Hackney and Islington (Quicksilver is based in Hackney) and new and established professional writers who wish to explore writing plays for children.

In September 2006 children from Hackney and Islington primary schools participated in workshops that explored storytelling and playwriting skills with professional theatre practitioners. The objective of the workshops was to really make the children excited about writing stories and plays. With 8-9 year olds we used Storytelling Storyacting, a liberating story technique based on the work of Vivian Paley. With 10-11 year olds we used a playwriting workshop based on an inspiring model from Soho Theatre.

Into this mix we brought a selected team of new and established writers who want to write for this age group. We are delighted to announce the writers who will be joining us on our PRIMARY VOICES journey. They are: Roger Lang, Mary Took, Debo Oluwatuminu, Alex Bulmer and Jennifer Farmer. Together we will all benefit from developing our understanding of contemporary 8-11 year olds and what matters to them.

A showcase of the older children’s short plays was then presented to their classmates, teachers, families and the writers at the Arcola Theatre in January 2007. The writers were then invited to submit a treatment and a scene which we will then take back to the children for consultation. Following consultation with the children one of the writers will be commissioned to develop their treatment into a script which will tour the UK in 2008.

Why is this project special? Because it brings children, writers and Quicksilver together in a unique way. The writers and Quicksilver will have access to the children’s thoughts, needs and preferences throughout the three year project. From the initial workshops to the production of the new play, children will give ideas, advice, inspiration and honest feedback. Their input will be integral to ensuring the new script is relevant and topical to 8-11 year olds.

PRIMARY VOICES is sponsored by Currell Residential and Arts & Business New Partners and funded by The Mercers' Company.
